Barnsley has always been a great place for walkers. Stroll through the Town Centre, the Victorian arcades, along the streets and pedestrian areas. Wander the market town of Penistone, ramble around Barnsley’s many nature reserves, reservoirs and parks or take a hike through the countryside. Barnsley is brilliant to explore by foot, wherever you are.

Prefer to travel by rail or bus? Barnsley has a convenient travel interchange in the heart of the town centre. The interchange connects the train and bus services, making it easy to switch between them.

You can also access the interchange by bike or on foot, as there’s an Active Travel Hub. The interchange is open from 5 am to midnight on weekdays, and from 6 am to midnight on weekends and bank holidays.

Another way to explore Barnsley is by bike, as the Trans Pennine Trail crosses the borough; providing traffic-free paths for cyclists and walkers. The trail runs from coast to coast, passing through scenic landscapes and historic sites along the way. You can join the trail at various points in Barnsley, such as Elsecar, Wombwell, or Penistone. You can also hire a bike from one of the cycle hubs in the area, or bring your own and use the secure bike lockers at the interchange.

FOR RAMBLERS WHO LOVE TO WALK

There’s no shortage of green spaces in Barnsley, from parks and nature reserves to reservoirs, woodlands and more.

The Trans Pennine trail is one of the longest walking routes in the UK, running from coast to coast across the North of England and through Barnsley; with access points at Elsecar, Wombwell and Penistone. The Transpennine trail has been designed with walkers in mind, with most of it being relatively flat and comprehensively signed. You can find out more about it here.

The Penistone Line trail covers brilliant landscapes from urban woods to farmlands and canal towpaths and runs from Sheffield to Huddersfield. Between Sheffield and Barnsley, the trail follows the rivers Dearne and Don and can be easily accessed from Barnsley (BNY) station and Wombwell (WOM) station.

Cycling is a popular activity in Barnsley for locals, visitors and all those passing through! The starting town for the Tour de Yorkshire and brief host to 2014’s Tour de France Grand Depart, Barnsley’s trails and cycling routes attract both casual and professional cyclists.

If you’re looking to travel by bicycle around the town centre and across the borough, you can find many dedicated cycle lanes. These will be indicated by road signs and markings.

Most of the cycle routes along the Transpennine trail are off-road and many of them are traffic-free throughout the 207 miles. The flat terrain makes this trail suitable for riders of all ages and experience levels, with many places to explore en route.

HOP ON AND OFF OF THE BUS ROUTES

Getting around Barnsley by bus is fast, accessible and affordable. You can access different parts of the borough from Barnsley Interchange, which connects train and bus services — making it easy to switch between them. You can also access the interchange by bike on foot through the Active Travel Hub.
